This medication is used to prevent certain types of malaria a parasite infection when traveling to certain areas that have malaria. Another drug may be used instead if you are going to an area with resistant malaria. Chloroquine may also be used with other medications to treat certain less severe (uncomplicated) types of malaria or a spreading infection with another parasite (ameba). Chloroquine is an amebicide and antimalarial drug. It works by killing ameba and the form of the malaria parasite that infects the red blood cells.Anti-malarial amoebicidal anti-inflammatory and used in collagen diseases.INDICATIONS:Suppression and treatment of malaria; amoebic hepatitis; in certain phases of lupus erythematosus rheumatoid arthritis and related collagen diseases.DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION:Discard ў tablets if not consumed immediately.MalariaSuppressionADULTS:2 tablets (310 mg base) taken on the same day each week commencing two weeks before exposure and continuing for 4 weeks after exposure is over.CHILDREN :1 to 4 years: 1/2 tablet4 to 8 years: 1 tabletover 8 years: adult doseTherapeuticInitial dose of 4 tablets for adults followed by 2 tablets eight hours later 2 tablets in a single dose each day for two days then 2 tablets weekly for four weeks.Amoebic hepatitis4 tablets daily in divided doses for two days then 1 tablet twice daily for two to three weeks.Lupus erythematosusAverage adult dose 1 tablet twice daily for one to two weeks followed by maintenance dose of 1 tablet daily.Rheumatoid arthritis1 tablet one to two times daily with meals for four to twelve weeks. Prolonged courses are sometimes necessary as response may not appear for one to three months after treatment commences and maximum benefit until much later. If side effects appear withdraw drug until they disappear reinstate treatment with 1/2 tablet daily and if well tolerated increase to 1 tablet. Usual maintenance dose is 1 tablet daily.

"An acute government funding crisis in Swaziland, Africa's last absolute monarchy, is disrupting supplies of HIV/AIDS drugs and hampering the fight against the virus in the country with the world's highest infection rate, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said Friday," Reuters reports. "Stocks of testing kits and related chemicals were 'almost dry,' making it next-to-impossible to chart the progress of the 70,000 patients on therapy or more than 130,000 other people carrying the virus, the aid agency said," according to Reuters. "With 26 percent of its adult population, or more than 200,000 people infected, Swaziland ranks as the most AIDS-affected country," Reuters writes (Cropley, (9/9). In related news, a new report from Swaziland's government "has found that more than half of [30,000 Swazis, mostly women, working] in Swaziland's garment industry are living with HIV, and officials are realizing that the once-hailed promise of manufacturing employment has become a financial and medical nightmare for tens of thousands of Swazi women," PlusNews reports (8/11).
